Spaceport America Construction Begins with AO13 Road Breaking Ground

LAS CRUCES, NM – Following a successful bid process, the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) and the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will break ground on road improvements for Spaceport America on Thursday, September 18. After a successful bid award on August 1, 2008, construction will begin by the Reiman Corporation, a construction company with over 15 years of experience in New Mexico. Once completed, the improved road will provide better access and allow the construction process at Spaceport America to continue on schedule.
The project will improve County Road AO13 from Engle, NM south to the intersection of AO13 and AO39, which is the entrance to Spaceport America. The road will be graded and improved before the application of a chip and seal road surface. Officials are hoping to have work completed before the end of the year, depending on the lead times for the structures.

NMSA officials and the NMDOT are conducting a corridor study for the southern approach to Spaceport America from an exit off Interstate 25 near Hatch, NM. The study will analyze and accept input for proposed alternate routes, and will work to identify the best option. This study should be concluded in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Spaceport America is the first purpose-built commercial space facility. Spaceport America holds great promise for New Mexico’s economic future and has been working closely with leading aerospace firms such as Lockheed Martin, UP Aerospace, Virgin Galactic, Microgravity Enterprises and Payload Specialties. With planning moving along rapidly, the NMSA currently projects that licensed vertical launches to begin in the first quarter of 2009 and that the terminal and hangar facility for horizontal launches should be completed by 2010.
