Briefs: Missing space in R&D policy; NASA budget

A reader notes that President Obama did not mention space during his speech today on science and R&D:
/-- Obama promises major investment in science - AP
/-- Obama vows investment in science - BBC
/-- Obama outlines science vision - physicsworld.com

Perhaps, as the reader suggests, if NASA had not dropped most of its R&D in favor of funding a handful of giant development projects like Ares I, it would get more backing for such activity.

[Update: Rand Simberg comments on the speech: There's Something Missing - Transterrestrial Musings.]

Meanwhile, NASA's budget for 2010 is formed with a temporary administrator in charge: NASA Budget Being Drafted Without a Top-Level Advocate - Aviation Week
