New space related competitions seem to appear about every day. From asteroid tagging to space tourism rides to sci-fi writing, there is something for everyone to pursue. The Contest section here lists a number of such competitions. See also the weblog Space Prizes, which is devoted to the subject. Below is a sample of recent space competitions.

The Planetary Society Offers $50,000 Prize to"design "a mission to rendezvous with and 'tag' a potentially dangerous near-Earth asteroid". Over 100 teams from around the world have entered as of June 2007.

Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Award
Pete Conrad Award - X PRZE Foundation
The X PRIZE Foundation sponsors this award for high school aged students who "develop a new, innovative concept to benefit the personal spaceflight industry within the next 50 years."

NASA Centennial Challenges Power beaming climber - X PRIZE Cup 2006
NASA's technology incentive prizes program recently gave out $200k to the winner of an astronaut glove contest. On going competitions range in areas from lunar regolith excavation to space elevator tethers and climbers.

The company, which consists of both volunteers and full-time professionalsm, is developing an elaborate set of Near Space technologies. The organization. They even have an Airship to Orbit concept they are pursuing for the long term.
